Master Bedroom Makeover One Plan Two Looks

The ceiling is textured and the room and trim are painted, now it's time to move on the the fun part, decorating!
As I mentioned in my  previous post, my plan for the room is to use neutrals for the walls and comforter so I can have two totally different looks by changing out the pillows, curtains and bedskirt for the winter and summer seasons.
For the walls I chose paint in Ralph Lauren's Kauai Jungle
and
Pottery Barn's velvet linen windowpane comforter for the bed.
I plan on sewing the rest of the bedding and curtains

Here are the fabrics I chose for my summer look. Colors from a room featured in the Pottery Barn catolog were my inspiration. I chose a blue gray velvet for the Euro shams, drop cloth for the bedskirt and curtains, and found a fun, modern print for an accent pillow.

I fell in love with this horse canvas from Home Goods.
He will be perfect for both looks.

Here are the fabrics for the Fall and Winter look.
I made the paisly pillow awhile back and have always loved the colors. It was my inspiration for choosing the warm color palate. I am wanting a cozy Ralph Lauren look for winter.

I found a mixture of patterns and textures that should work well with the comforter.
The sample in the middle is actually vinyl that is a leather look alike.

Well, that's the plan. I will share more as the room progresses
Thanks for stopping by

Pottery Barn Look Alike Tutorial

I fell in love with this Pottery Barn horse when I saw it at Nydia's blog, Evolution of Home. You should take a visit to her blog if you haven't been there and see her knock off version and instructions. She does some great projects. Thanks to her inspiration I tried making one of my own.

Pottery Barn's horse wall art

Here is my version and this is how I did it.
I found some inexpensive lightweight plank paneling at Lowe's. It fits together kind of like wood flooring but is very light.

I  used 9 boards and cut them 25 inches long, so my background ended up being 22.5 inches wide and 25 inches tall. I then fit the boards together.

I cut 2 1x2 boards and used Liquid Nails to glue on the back across the planks about 2 inches from each side securing the boards together. Be safe, use your protective gear!

I added some weight to make sure the boards had good contact, and waited until the next day to move on to the next step.

Now to the fun part! I used Minwax Pre-Stain wood conditioner first, it helps soft wood absorb stain more uniformly.

Then I applied Minwax stain in English Chestnut. Be sure to allow recommended dry time before beginning the next step.

I had drawn a horse and taken it to Kinko's where they enlarged it for me. I think horses are one of the most difficult animals to draw and get the proportions right. The drawing I took to Kinko's was cut in several places where I decided I needed adjustment, and all taped together. The lady looked at me like I was kind of kooky. I transferred my pattern to contact paper which I then secured to my stained board.

Make sure the contact paper is securely pressed down to avoid paint seeping under.
Brush from the top of the contact paper out toward the edges to reduce the chances
of seeping.

I used some latex enamel paint I had on hand and lightly brushed over the entire piece. It is better to do several thin coats with dry time in between. You can  leave as much wood grain showing as you like. After it dried I sanded the edges and did some distressing. A coat of paste wax and that's it!

   Here he is, my version.

Have a great weekend

Little French Finale

If you didn't see my sneak peak before, here is the little end table I found at GW the other day. I was thrilled to find just the right piece to try one of Miss Mustard Seed's classic finishes on. I've been dying to do a piece with a stained top and painted and glazed bottom. This one had such nice curves, I knew it was the perfect candidate.
I used my little Black and Decker sander for the flat parts and did the rest by hand. I was pleasantly surprised at how easily the finish came off.
I used Minwax Dark Walnut stain for the top. The bottom is done in a creamy white followed with a little distressing and the Dark Walnut again for the glaze. I was a little nervous about using the stain as a glaze so it took me a whole day to work up the courage to actually wipe it on. I am such a chicken about things like that sometimes, after all, what is the worst that will happen?  I'm glad I went ahead because I do like the way it looks. For the top coat I used Minwax Paste wax.
Here she is all finished and ready for her close up. I love the staging part of the photo shoot, that is my kind of fun!
I think this finish is a great compromise for those who love wood but want to update a piece. You get the best of both worlds.
I will be putting her up for sale now that her face lift is done and hopefully she will find a new family to love her. I wonder if this is anywhere close to how a plastic surgeon feels after a successful procedure? Wish it were that easy with people, just sand a little, slap on some paint and varnish and you're good to go another 30 years!
I want to say a special thank you to Alison at Stuff and Nonsense for featuring my Holy Cow chair at her Fridays unfolded party. It was really exciting to see my chair chosen to be featured with some other great projects!

Final Touches and Laundry Room Reveal!

At last, here are the finishing touches and reveal of the basement laundry room!!!!!!!!!
After finishing the Craig's List Buffet, I started thinking about what I wanted to put up on the wall over it. I had a big, gaudy ornate gold frame in a closet that I decided would make a great chalkboard. So I got out the white spray paint for a make over. I wish I had taken a picture of the entire frame before, it was not very pretty.

A coat of paint can make things look so much better.

That is the new pantry cabinet for my extra canned goods.
No more dusty open shelving!
Here is the finished buffet and the outdoor rug  from Home Decorator's
Collections. I decided an outdoor rug would be a good choice for a basement laundry and I fell in love with the swirly vine design.

I found the metal fork and spoon about five years ago at a garage sale and thought they were fun but had never found the right place to hang them up. Now they finally have a spot and I think they add a little whimsy to the room.

For the top of the buffet,I pulled out a silver tray from my stash and spray painted a vase I already had that was previously black and red. You can't see in this picture but the vase has a branch and bird relief design on it. The nest is real, but I put shells in it instead of eggs. I started collecting real nests several years ago and I like to display them throughout the house. It is getting pretty obvious that I have a thing for birds and nests.

There on the left is the little roadside rescue table that started this whole laundry room makeover. The ceiling tin I already had and just painted it silver to reflect more light into the room. I used big glass canisters from Target to hold my laundry soap and oxyclean.

I bought a new drying rack and didn't realize how huge it was until I got it home and put it together. It is much wider than my other one and almost as tall as me! I didn't realize they came that large. I love the black and white prints above the drying rack, they are from Mary Carol Garrity's collection. I don't know if you have heard of Nell Hill's but it is a wonderful store about an hour from us in Atchison, KS. Next time I go I will try to remember to take some pictures to put on my blog.

For the final touches I found the blue mirror for $10.00, and I hand stamped some flour sack kitchen towels with my bird stamp.  The room feels so much brighter and more cheerful now. I am actually enjoying doing laundry although I'm not sure how long that will last.

Hope you enjoyed the tour, you can click here to see the scary before pictures. I just couldn't bring myself to put them on with the reveal pics.

Little Chair Before and After

Hi everyone, I've been busy this week sewing and painting for a show my sister-in-law and I are participating in this upcoming weekend. It is a fundraiser for the football team at Olathe South, where my kids went to high school.  A group of mom's whose sons are players put the show together and there should be about 55 vendors, not bad for the first year. I will have some painted pieces, pillows and the doggie bling collar covers there along with some home decor items. Hopefully there will be a good turn out and even more hopefully people will like my things. I wanted to share the before and after of this cute little chair I did for the show.

I liked the wood and wasn't sure I wanted to paint it at first, but decided to go ahead since it is petite. I thought it would look darling as a desk chair in a little girls room, or as a vanity or accent chair. The seat cushion was in sad shape, I couldn't wait to rip that off!
Here she is after paint, sanding and paste wax.
I chose a cream and tan toile for the seat. I hate when I make something to sell and then start thinking I want to keep it.
I've been making some pillows for the show as well. These pillows are in the cream quilted fabric I used to make the slip covered chair I showed in a previous post.  I took pictures of the pillow process and plan to do a tutorial hopefully next week.
Well I better get going I've got lots more to do. Hold a good thought for me this weekend.
